"What your resist, persists". -- Carl Jung
Often we try to push through anger, ignore fear, minimize sadness, and tell ourselves to "tough it out". Many will think this is strong, disciplined, in control, but the body doesn’t see it that way.
The sequence is very different. What feelings we don’t process get suppressed and suppressed feelings get's stored. Then the stored feelings will come back… even more powerful.
Feelings can come back as tears, harsh words, exhaustion, illness, or unhealthy behavior and obsessions.
The un-resolved argument, the un-spoken feelings, and the habit of brushing things off to keep the peace. The nervous system translates this as unfinished threats, and stores the feelings even if you don't think about them.
It is easy to emphasize physical health in the gym and the kitchen, but the emotional health is the best way to ease suffering.
The take away:
When it’s avoided, it settles and lingers.
When it's named, it alleviate emotional pressure.
Even when talking about feelings does not resolve any logic, it still fixes the problem by relieving the emotional pressure.
