Dear Fear, A letter of Good Bye

It’s the beginning of August, and with it comes a season of change. For many, that means starting middle school, beginning high school, or heading off to college, and every new season asks something of us.

A mentor once told me that the price of change is discomfort. And for many of us, discomfort is often accompanied by fear. That fear can be loud, convincing us to doubt ourselves, question our abilities, or cling to what is familiar. But fear doesn't have to have the final word.

One of the healthiest ways to work through fear is to talk it out. The next best thing is to write it out.

Below is a letter you can read to your fear. My hope is that it helps you set the right expectations, reminds you of who you are, and fills this season of change with comfort, courage, and love.

Good luck with whatever change lies ahead. And even more importantly, good luck letting go of the fear that never truly belonged within you.

Dear Fear,

It is time for you to go. We've known each other for a long time, but you have overstayed your welcome. You are no longer a trusted voice worth listening to.

You arrived quietly. You convinced me to worry, lied about my potential, and underestimated my courage. Somewhere along the way, I stopped being protected and became a prisoner.

You questioned my abilities, distorted my opportunities, and planted doubt in my relationships. You whispered that failure was always around the corner, that rejection was inevitable, and that playing it safe was the only option.

Fear, you are a bully.

And today, I'm taking my life back.

I choose courage over comfort. I choose faith over certainty. I choose growth over stagnation. I choose to chase my dreams instead of running from imagined disasters.

I know you'll try to return. That's what you do. You'll whisper the same old lies and recycle the same tired stories. But I'm ready for you now. I recognize your tricks, and they no longer fool me.

I've learned that courage isn't the absence of fear—it's moving forward in spite of it. The strongest people aren't fearless. They're willing to take risks, embrace vulnerability, and keep going anyway.

Welcome to my healthy boundaries.

You are no longer my identity, my advisor, or my excuse.

From this day forward, I will speak even when my voice shakes. I will love even when there are no guarantees. I will dream even when success isn't certain. And I will keep moving forward, one courageous step at a time.

You may have started as protection, but somewhere along the way you became my prison. You are a liar, a bully, and no longer welcome.

The rest of my life is waiting.

Goodbye, Fear.

Sincerely,

Me
