The Kitchen Table vs. The Boardroom Table... the rules are different!
The Kitchen Table is where human live. It’s where vulnerability like fear, insecurity, sadness, love, and confusion comes out. At the kitchen table, the goal is to interact, relate, and communicate.
The Boardroom Table, on the other hand, is built for logic and reason. It’s where people negotiate, compete, persuade, or protect their interests. Emotions are usually held back, and the focus is on efficiency, decision-making, & results.
When boardroom behavior is at the kitchen table, relationships get damaged. Instead of empathy, there is cross-examination. Instead of listening, there is debate. Instead of feelings, there is logic.
The opposite is also true. When kitchen table techniques are brought into a boardroom, we may be taken advantage of because the room is built for logic, reason, rather than feelilngs.
In relationships, boardroom techniques lead to hurt feelings, defensiveness, arguments, and litigation... not LOVE.
Bottom Line:
At the kitchen table, lead with feelings.
At the boardroom table, lead with logic.
